Howard Maples

Howard S. Maples, 91 of Paint Rock, Alabama, went home to be with his Lord and reunite with his beloved wife, Alice Mildred, on Wednesday, November 30, 2011.   Mr. Maples was born on September 27, 1920, in Woodville, Alabama.

In April 1939 at the age of 18, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) where he worked at Desoto State Park, Fort Payne, AL doing masonry work in the construction of Desoto State Park for 15 months until June 1940.

On June 19, 1940 he joined the U.S. Navy. One of America's Greatest Generation, a proud United States Navy Veteran, served our country six years (1940--1946) during WWII in the Pacific Theater.

He attended Paint Rock Baptist Church.

Mr. Maples retired from Redstone Arsenal in June of 1975.  He worked as an Instrument Engineer for thirty-five years.

After retirement he worked for the City of Paint Rock putting in the water system and drove a school bus for Madison County High School.

He was an avid Atlanta Braves Fan.  He was a generous man with a heart of gold and loved and helped support his family from the time he was a young man until the day he died.

He was preceded in death by his wife (Alice Popejoy Maples) of  62 years, his parents Albert S. and Pearl Maples, his brother Leon Maples (Louise) and sisters Doris Elmore and Hilda Williams (Larry).

Survivors include one sister, Mary Jo Parton of New Hope, AL; one son and daughter-in-law, Blanton and Linda Maples; one daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Bobby McGee; three grandsons, Jason Maples, Daniel Maples and Robbie McGee; five great-grandchildren whom he shared a great love with,  Chelsea Maples, Lily Maples, RJ, Brayden, and Logan McGee, all of Chattanooga, TN., and many nieces and nephews

The family will receive visitors at Scottsboro Funeral Home Monday, December 5th, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m., followed by the Service at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Eldridge Crisco officiating.  Burial will follow in Paint Rock Cemetery with military honors.
