Lloyd "Duke" Taylor's teenage granddaughter, Elizabeth Taylor, as she remembers all the fun times they had from dancing at World War 2 Coastguard Reunions to hanging a swing from a tree limb in the backyard for them to play together, to ?shing at his good friend, Bob Rolf's house when it started pouring rain and all they caught were great memories together. We remember times when we would be at a store with him, and he would pick up a box of chocolates for someone just to brighten their day or say a simple "Thank you." Even at the age of 96 he was very active with cooking, doing the laundry, paying his own bills, and even playing with his active cat, Cookie. He loved to volunteer at the nursing home where his wife, Florence, is living, whom he was able to visit at least three times a week thanks to a local bus service. He never met a stranger. All of his many friends in the Pleasant Grove/Skyline area were like family to him. They were always there for a friendly chat, often brought him a meal, and took him to church after he quit driving at the age of 94. Lloyd served his country in WWII as a Coast Guardsman aboard the Navy attack transport USS Centuarus AKA-17, surviving heavy kamikaze attacks during multiple amphibious landings in the Paci?c. In addition to receiving 6 battle stars, Lloyd was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for Valor and the Navy Combat Action Ribbon. He is survived by his wife Florence, who was "Duchess" to the "Duke" when they rode motorcycles in their younger days. He is also survived by: Sister, Gloria Roberts of Caseyville, IL; Sister-in-law, Mary Taylor of Metropolis, IL`; Son, Daniel Taylor and wife Laurie of Athens, AL; Step-daughter, Carmen Stover and husband Eugene of Chattanooga, TN; Daughter-in-law, whom he usually referred to as daughter because "in-law" seemed too impersonal, Irene Taylor of "My Papa always loved to dance... Now he's dancing with Jesus," recalls Elizabeth Taylor Thursday, December 15, 2011 11:09:27 PM CT East Limestone, AL; Grandchildren, Leslie Stover and wife Linda of Chattanooga, TN, and Elizabeth Taylor of East Limestone, AL; Great Grandchild, Ashlyn Stover of Chattanooga, TN. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Harold and Thelma Taylor of Olmstead, Il, and his Brother, George Taylor of Metropolis, Il He knew the Lord and was ready to make his journey to heaven. His greatest desire was for his family and friends to be ready to join him there when their life's journey is complete. Funeral services for Mr. Taylor will be 2:00pm Monday, December 19, 2011 at Scottsboro Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Ikard officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00pm until funeral time. Pall bearers are; Leslie Stover, Randy Helms, Patrick Hall, Kendall Teague, Edward Ikard and Ted Thomas.
